Bigcommerce is looking for a technology leader to lead teams in software development and supporting functions. As a technical leader, you are a pragmatic visionary that can understand and translate business needs into workable technology solutions that meet the needs of customers via software systems that scale both technically and operationally.


As the leader of the engineering group, you are responsible for maintaining and raising engineering and operational standards by mentoring and reviewing the work of your team and recruiting, nurturing top talent as part of a high-performance organization. You will manage several engineering teams who are developing and maintaining vital services, workflow engines and customer-facing applications at the heart of our technology offerings, supporting the Bicommerce business globally. These teams develop and operate services and applications supporting high-volume, high-margin business via distributed computing solutions – many of our systems are highly inter-connected with the other cloud-based technology stacks and third party service providers.

You must be an innovative senior engineering leader who is able to deliver next-generation store management and ecommerce platform experiences for merchants and customers globally, focusing on meeting key operations management needs in today’s complex hybrid cloud environments. Some of the cloud’s key attributes – for example, self-service provisioning, flexible capacity, speed and agility, and global reach – simultaneously create important new platform management requirements as well as new opportunities to address longstanding platform management problems. You will be responsible for leading teams through rapidly evolving complex demands, including multiple projects with dependencies on other internal organizations. As successful technical leader at Bigcommerce, you need to be innovative, detail-oriented, team-oriented, self-directed and adaptable to new development environments and changing business requirements. In addition to development, your teams own operating the systems in a high-9’s availability environment, as well as to scale globally. You should have the ability to roll up your sleeves and become hands on when necessary; it is an essential trait of a successful leader.

What you'll do:

Build and operate a high performance software development organization via hiring, mentoring and growing a best-of-class product development team.

Co-own (with Product Management, Business owners and stakeholders) the product strategy and roadmap.

Lead the high-quality execution of platform products against project plans and delivery commitments.

Hands-on leadership of software development managers, engineers along with supporting operations functions within an Agile/Scrum environment; the systems have high-9’s availability environment.

Work closely with engineers and product managers to architect, develop the best technical designs for reliability and scalability.

Technically dive deep; balance technology needs with business, customers’ needs and demands.

Budgetary responsibility for staffing and associated 3rd party product/services portfolio.

Successful candidates will be strong leaders who can prioritize well, be detail oriented, passionate in applied technology; they will value customer-experience, are innovative as well as quantitative, can communicate clearly and will have a consistent track record of delivery. The role requires creative engineering balanced with high quality and customer focus for solutions with business relevance.

Desired Skills and Experience

10+ years’ experience building and managing development teams that design and deliver large distributed systems – preferably in agile development, object-oriented systems realm with high availability.

10+ years’ experience leading technology teams, leading both directly and via managers.

Must be technically credible to lead teams of world-class software engineers and be able to make the right design decisions and technology choices.

Must be credible with partner-stakeholders (business, product/program etc.) for strong team and results-oriented delivery.

Demonstrated experience in building/operating products and systems in a consumer-centric e-commerce space is required.

Excellent oral and written communication skills – demonstrated ability to influence technical and non-technical audiences including those at the senior leadership levels.

Detail orientation on technology, technical-development, quality, operations and system performance.

Bachelors or Advanced Degree in Engineering preferably in Computer Science (or related discipline)

Preferred Qualifications

Additional business management/related degree a strong plus.

Preferences to those with strengths in quantitative/analytical skills as well as experience in handling budgetary responsibilities with success.
