Responsible for providingcomprehensive legal advice to seniormanagement and all Group functions, the teamadvises on and takes an active involvementin all business and operational strategies andinitiatives, from legislative and regulatorymatters to the setting of policies, standards andprocedures for guarding against and reportingon legal risk and reputational managementissues.
We are now inviting qualified individuals to join this team in the role of Senior Legal Counsel. This is leadership role reporting to the General Counsel.
Your main responsibilities will include:
Providing expert legal advice, guidance and support primarily to the Retail Banking & Wealth Management (RBWM) business in Australia, with particular focus on the credit business
Provide general commercial law support to the Marketing, HR, IT and Purchasing businesses
Manage a team of 3 including a Legal Counsel, Assistant Legal Counsel and Paralegal
Identify, formulate, and communicate strategic policies, procedures and controls to ensure that the Groups exposure to legal risk in the allocated business areas is effectively managed
Support the execution of group corporate transactions, projects and initiatives as required by the mortgages, consumer finance and other RBWM businesses across Australia
Ensure legal implications and risks are effectively communicated to, and understood by, relevant parties and business areas
Ensure any matters arising from legal issues are managed and mitigated promptly, with remedial action initiated in line with the materiality of the risk or issue
Brief the General Counsel on any core issues arising in business areas or relevant legislative changes
Proactively and promptly advise the business of material legal developments and their implications;
Desired Skills and Experience
To be successful in this position you will need:
To be a qualified lawyer with 7 – 10 years post qualification experience;
Knowledge and experience of banking, with a particular focus on Retail banking
A strong working knowledge of the Australian banking and financial services legal regime;
Proven leadership experience with the ability to lead an experienced team
Strong negotiation and influencing skills, with the ability to make decisions under pressure and problem solve
Excellent communication and relationship management skills
