Applications are invited for the position of Director of Investment, Australia and New Zealand based in UK Trade & Investment’s office in the British Consulate-General in Sydney.
The Director of Investment will report to the Director-General UKTI Australia and New Zealand (based in Sydney) and will line manage the four Heads of Investment based in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, and Auckland. The Director is responsible for strategic planning and day-to-day management of the work of UKTI’s investment team in Australia and New Zealand.
This involves support–both directly and through the team–of Australian and New Zealand companies wishing to invest or expand in the UK–including the strategic account management of major existing inward investors–and the promotion of investment opportunities in UK infrastructure to the major Super and Sovereign Wealth Funds.

Position responsibilities include:

To provide strategic direction to the inward investment effort in Australia and New Zealand liaising closely with UKTI’s HQ in London on business planning and resource issues and the implementation of new strategic initiatives.
To manage the day-to-day work of UKTI’s investment team to ensure that resources are deployed effectively to meet agreed targets and wider objectives.
To develop a strong network of contacts with major investors in the UK, early stage start-up companies and the key institutional fund managers and support the team in their interactions with these businesses.
To develop close and effective working relationships with UKTI HQ, the wider FCO network in Australia and New Zealand, other inward investment agencies (e.g. Scottish Development International and London & Partners), and key commercial partners (e.g. Australian British Chamber of Commerce).

Skills and competences required:

The successful candidate should have an undergraduate degree and a minimum of five years’ experience of dealing with international business in a leadership role. S/he will need to demonstrate strong business acumen and have strong financial management experience.

We are looking for a self-starter who has well-developed interpersonal skills and the confidence to deliver at CEO/ Board level. The successful candidate should have significant experience of leading and motivating teams which have delivered high-quality results. They should be able to coach, mentor, and guide the investment team so that it delivers to its full potential. The candidate should have good research and evaluation skills and IT and presentation skills.

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate strengths in the following competences (and provide evidence of this in previous jobs at interview):

Seeing the big picture is about having a clear vision for the network and the ability to think strategically and develop and implement creative approaches to delivering overall goals.
Achieving commercial outcomes is all about delivering results against challenging targets and objectives. It requires a commercial and financial mindset to ensure that resources are deployed in a way that will deliver the greatest value-add.
Leading and communicating is about leading from the front and communicating with clarity, conviction, and enthusiasm (particularly in times of change). It’s about supporting principles of diversity and inclusion. It also requires an ability to present a positive, professional image of oneself and UKTI as an organisation to external stakeholders.
Making effective decisions is about being objective and using sound judgement, evidence, and knowledge to develop effective business strategies and to tackle difficult tasks/ problems. Previous experience of developing business plans and managing financial budgets would be an asset.
Collaborating and partnering is about developing and maintaining positive, professional, and trusting working relationships with a wide range of people. It is about credibility with our clients and delivering on what we promise. It is about maintaining close working relationships with UKTI HQ, other inward investment agencies, and key multipliers. The successful candidate will also engage with senior management in the British High Commissions in both Canberra and Wellington in support of the UK Government’s wider prosperity agenda.
Delivering at pace is about focusing on priorities and delivering good quality work in a timely fashion and instilling this performance culture in the team whilst at the same time addressing any performance issues that might arise resolutely, fairly, and promptly.
There will be opportunities for regular travel within Australia and New Zealand and occasional trips to the UK for industry sector briefing tours, and to Singapore and Hong Kong for training.

Salary:
Starting salary from $118,000 pa, paid monthly, dependent on skills and experience, plus 11% superannuation.
